Oligarchs, corporate power and democracy in the Czech Republic

Oligarchs, corporate power and democracy in the Czech Republic

Monday 22 May, 6pm

Conference Room, Mundo B, 26 Rue d'Edimbourg, Brussels

Trump has been dominating headlines, but not much has been said about therise of media moguls and business tycoons here in Europe.

Polls show that in the Czech Republic, oligarch and finance minister Andrek Babis populist party ANO (Yes!) is set to win the legislative elections by a landslide. Babi is a politically powerful billionaire and owner of media companies and a large agribusiness conglomerate whose authoritarian politics, combined with control over media, would be a serious threat to democracy.

Join us for a short film screening and discussion to  find out about what is happening in Czech Republic and to share ideas about what we can do.

  • Why is the EU doing so little to stop the erosion of democracy in Central and Eastern Europe?
  • What can we do that is useful to support movements resisting the growing concentration of power with oligarchs?

With journalist and activist
Jakub Patočka (Editor in Chief of the online newspaper Deník Referendum and founder of the Friends of the Earth movement in the Czech Republic) and Zuzana Vlasatá and who have just published a book on Babi.

When: Monday 22 May, 6pm
Where: Conference Room, Mundo B, Rue dEdimbourg 26, Ixelles (nearest metro: Porte de Namur)
